The United States has been experiencing a decline in the overall mover rate, indicating that fewer Americans are relocating across the country. This trend has significant implications for Southwest Florida, as it affects the inflow and outflow of individuals to and from the region.
Despite declines in the total number of people relocating, the Sunshine State, Florida, emerged as a popular destination for those Americans seeking a new home. With a remarkable influx of 318,855 individuals in 2022 (that’s 873 people per day), Florida became the fastest-growing state in terms of population. This growth was driven by both positive net domestic migration and net international migration.
Texas also witnessed a considerable surge in net domestic migration. A total of 230,961 more people moved into the state than out of it.
The Carolinas, encompassing both North Carolina and South Carolina, experienced positive net domestic migration gains as well. North Carolina welcomed 99,796 new residents, while South Carolina saw a net gain of 84,030 people.
California, despite its reputation as a desirable destination, experienced the largest population decline, with a net loss of 343,230 individuals. Similarly, New York saw a substantial net domestic outmigration of 299,557 people, leading to a further decrease in its population. Illinois also experienced a net loss of 141,656 individuals through domestic migration.
